This garden was a blank canvas with a brief to create a space that works well for adult entertaining, two young children and a variety of pets. The garden was divided into sections: Large bi-fold doors open out from the open plan living area of the house onto a large dining terrace – surrounded by lush, shade tolerant planting. An additional sun terrace is located at the far end of the garden. Here the planting is a mix of scented lavender, grasses and edibles: Apples, pears, strawberries and vegetable beds are incorporated into the space.

A bespoke timber screen separates the main garden from the more utilitarian area which is where the shed, compost and chickens live. This is also the main play area for the children, with sunken trampoline, climbing frame and small Astro-turf pitch for ball sports.

The front garden is also put to good use, with as much planting as possible. A new Beech hedge encloses the gravel drive, with sun loving plants against the south facing front wall. A new bike shed was built with a green roof, planted with herbs, wild strawberries and other drought tolerant plants. Special attention has been given to biodiversity and drought resistant planting: Green roof, bee box, bird box, composting area and rainwater harvesting.
